Private school fees in Canberra: what parents can compare
Canberra families have a smaller set of non-government schools to compare, which makes a careful, like-for-like comparison easier. The key is to compare the same year levels and to model the full pathway, including the senior years.
Canberra schools draw families from across the ACT and nearby New South Wales. Fees, levies and the year levels each school offers can differ a lot, so it helps to know exactly which years your child would attend at each school before comparing costs.
How ACT pathways differ
In the ACT, many government students move to a separate college for Years 11 and 12, while most non-government schools run straight through to Year 12. If you are comparing a public pathway with a private one, model the senior years on their own so the comparison stays fair.
- Compare Kindergarten with Kindergarten and Year 7 with Year 7.
- Check which levies are compulsory and which are optional.
- Ask how sibling discounts apply when children overlap.
- Keep uniforms, devices, camps and transport outside the headline fee.
Watch the expensive overlap years
For families with more than one child, the hardest years are often when two children are both in secondary school. Modelling each child separately shows when those years arrive and how much a sibling discount really helps.
